Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique known for its white-on-blue stitching, with the word “sashiko” meaning “little stabs.” Originating in the Edo period (1603–1867), it uses running stitches for decorative or functional reinforcement of fabric. Today, sashiko is popular in clothing, bags, accessories, and home items, reflecting the Japanese philosophy of mottanai, which emphasizes reducing waste.
